Training Facilities

Oakwood Main
Oakwood Main is a major teaching and research hospital and home to three medical residency programs in partnership with the Wayne State University School of Medicine. It is a 555 bed level 2 trauma center with approximately 75,000 emergency department visits per year. It serves as one of the main teaching facilities for the Orthopaedic Program with the residents completing their PGY 1st, 2nd , 3rd and 5th year trauma experiences, their 3rd year spine rotation and they spend some of their time on sports and adult reconstruction there as well.

Oakwood Heritage
Oakwood Heritage serves as one our primary teaching sites for our elective orthopaedic rotations including adult reconstruction during our 1st, 2nd and 4th year, hand and upper extremity during our 2nd and 5th year, foot and ankle during our 1st and 3rd year and sports during our 3rd and 4th year. It is a 145 bed hospital that is also one of the sites of our weekly didactics.

St John Hospital and Medical Center
St John is a busy level 1 trauma center located in Detroit, MI. It has approximately 126,000 emergency department visits per year and is staffed by 3 orthopaedic traumatologists. It is the site of our PGY 4 trauma experience and provides excellent to poly trauma, community trauma and inner city penetrating trauma. The rotation has numerous PA's and NP's so the PGY 4 has valuable protected OR time.

John Dingell VA Medical Center
The Detroit Veteran's Administration Hospital is a 432-bed inpatient and outpatient facility located in downtown Detroit adjacent to the Detroit Medical Center. The VA Hospital participates in training Wayne State University residents in a number of medical and surgical specialties including orthopaedics. The hospital contains a full range of medical, surgical and psychiatric services, both inpatient and outpatient. This hospital serves as the site for our PGY 4 adult reconstruction/general orthopaedic rotation. This rotation has numerous PA's and NP's so the PGY 4 has valuable protected OR time.

University of Michigan Health System
For our pediatric and musculoskeletal oncology rotations our residents are sent to the University of Michigan. Mott's Childrens Hospital is a level 1 pediatric hospital that provides a very busy trauma and elective experience for our PGY 2's, 3's and 4's. The PGY 3's also spend two months on MSK oncology here.
